A Paralympic athlete intends to make her final bid for Gold in Rio - then end her own life.

Marieke Vervoort has made it clear that the 2016 Paralympics will be her last as she considers her final days on earth.

But it has got so bad that she is considering euthanasia, which is legal in her homeland.

"I have a bucket list, including stunt flying, and I have started thinking about euthanasia," Vervoort said.

The stunning revelation comes on the eve of the Games, which start tomorrow in Brazil.

At the London Olympics, the 37-year-old wheelchair athlete won gold in the 100m sprint in her T52 class, and silver in the 200m.

She will be hoping to medal again in these events. But there are far bigger challenges ahead when the Games come to an end on September 17.

Vervoort believes that euthanasia is now the only option left for her.

In French newspaper Le Parisien, she detailed the struggles she goes through every day, and the sometimes unbearable pain of her condition.

And she admits that to take her own life would finally give her peace.

"Everybody sees me laugh with my gold medal, but no one sees the dark side," Vervoort said.

"I suffer greatly, sometimes sleeping only ten minutes a night - and still go for the gold. Rio is my last wish."

The constant sleepless nights and the agony of her condition mean Vervoort faints regularly, and it has pushed her to the brink.

She was paralysed in 2000 when struck down by the rare disease, and slowly her condition has worsened. On Sunday, July 17, she recorded in an on-line diary: "Fortunately I had a better night even though I had a moment of crisis for about 45 minutes."

"With me this morning, it felt like I had slept only an hour, but that was not the case. My body is just exhausted... I let the nurse give me a shot of morphine and this morning went purely on character to the training."

"I literally knocked all my fears and frustrations out of me."

Euthanasia was legalised in Belgium in 2002, and can take place with the written consent of three doctors.
