Jodan and Anias have been attached at the head for 13 months, now they can finally look each other in the eye.

They’ve been inseparable, quite literally, for 13 months.

But now twins Jodan and Anias will finally be able to look each other in the eye for the first time.

The pair were born in September last year conjoined at the head.

The chances of conjoined twins arriving stillborn is high, with a survival rate of only 5 to 25 per cent overall.

Doctors had given their mother Nicole McDonald and father Christian the opportunity to abort the hugely complicated birth.

But Nicole said she was determined to give the boys a chance at life.

I had heard their heart beats...they spent their life listening to mine, Nicole wrote on her GoFundMe page.

It was my job as their mother to give them life and I decided that I would give everything up, if need be, to do so.

And after 16 hours of surgery in New York, Jadon and Anias have been separated.

Nicole, who has managed to raise more than $150,000 for the twins medical care, has been documenting the incredible story on her Facebook page.

Dr James Goodrich led the surgical team who carried out the operation at the Montefiore Medical Center.

His first words to Nicole afterwards were: "Well, we did it".

At one point, the procedure became so complicated it was almost abandoned.

Anias, in particular, had a very difficult time.

His blood pressure and heart rate dropped dangerously low and required a further five hours of care.

Doctors still fear he may not be able to move one side of his body at first.

And the boys still face months of critical care.
