The world-famous kung-fu monks of China's fabled Shaolin Temple are bringing their fast and furious blend of martial arts and Buddhist philosophy to West Africa - starting with Senegal.

Gravity-defying somersaults, kicks and tricks - the hallmark of the warrior monks of China’s Shaolin Temple, the birthplace of kung-fu. A common sight for years across Asia, the United States and Europe, the monks are turning their attention to Africa - performing in the Senegalese capital Dakar for the very first time.

"Kung-fu isn’t simply a physical exercise. through learning kung-fu you can also learn and admire the culture of Buddhism." Shi Yancen, a monk said.

Many of these monks begin their training as small children, before joining the ranks of monks at the fabled Shaolin Temple, nestled in the forested mountains of China’s Henan province.

And thousands here in Senegal are already hooked, seduced by kung-fu films starring the likes of Jet Li and Bruce Lee.

The nation has been runner up in the pan-African championships since 2010 Aside from sporting success, the philosophy behind it is also rubbing off.

"You toughen your heart to make it strong and from there you get training in life that can help you elsewhere." Ousmane Ngom, director of Senegalese Kung-Fu and Wushu Federation said.

A few lucky ones are invited on stage to perform with the monks. A rare chance to learn from the very best.

"Their presence here does us good. We are learning a lot. The Shaolin are the best -- they are very good, they have a real gift." Gael Diakha, Cisse, Kung-Fu Performer said.

With affiliated academies all over the world and a growing number of fans in Africa, for the once meek Shaolin monks, kung-fu is the gift that seems set to keep on giving.
