In order to promote national power and strengthen connections with other countries, Emperor Chengzu of the Ming Dynasty dispatched Zheng He on multiple voyages to the West. In 1405, Zheng He embarked on his first voyage. His fleet consisted of over 200 ships and carried more than 20,000 people, including sailors, soldiers, technicians, interpreters, as well as a large quantity of gold and silk for trade and gifts. The round trips took two years. Some countries visited by Zheng He sent envoys onboard with tribute to the Ming Dynasty. Zheng He’s voyages to the West were a remarkable feat in the history of world navigation. Today, there are still many architectural monuments in Southeast Asia commemorating Zheng He.
