权力的游戏精读：英文中各种表达兄弟的词

lad，年轻小伙，相当于兄弟，伙计，哥们。英语中还可以用dude, fella, mate, buddy等等。

flurry，一阵，指少而密集，但总量不大。

now and then，时不时地。同意的还有occasionally, on occasion, now and again, once in a while, at times, from time to time.

clad in，这个clad 其实是clothe 的过去式和过去分词，不过大家常见的clothe的动词过去式和过去分词还是clothed，而clad则是古英语。作品的题材是历史魔幻正剧，作者也一直用古英语的笔法和词汇。

shelter，庇护地，可以躲避恶劣天气或灾害的地方。并不一定必须要有房屋建筑，只要能保证安全不受自然侵害的地方都可以叫做shelter(排除野兽和人的因素)。

near at hand，近在咫尺，就在手边。很好理解，和汉语的用法都一样。

the means of，means的含义是方法，途径，手段, 它并不是mean的三单或者是mean名词形式的复数，而是单独的词，而且means本身是单复同形的。

我们来看看例句：

The drawing is transferred onto the wood by means of carbon paper.

这幅画是通过碳纸印到木头上的。

I'm so glad to have been the means of bringing you two young people together.

我很高兴我起到了使你们两个年轻人相识的作用。

means的含义就是method, process. 而by means of的含义是using the method. 一个是名词方法，途径。一个是词组通过使用这种方法途径。

cocksure，过分自信的，自以为是的。骄傲的公鸡，非常地形象。

bound，这里是约束的意思，动词词性。bound有很多含义：反弹，限定，范围，接壤等动词词或名词词性。常见的短语be bound to 是必然的意思，在这词组里的bound是形容词性的。
